As the eldest son of Ganjiro Nakamura 2, Tojuro Sakata was born in 1931 in Kyoto. He appeared on the stage in Osaka Kadoza as the "Senjaku 2" in 1941. In 1953, he performed in "Sonezaki Shinju", which had been long parted the audiences for 250 years, in Shimbashi ENBUJO. His father was also very satisfied with his first performance. Therefore the "Senjaku Wave" was started. In 1981, he formed the Kabuki Troupe and began to perform in the US, Soviet Union, Canada and Mexico since 1983. In 1990, he inherited the stage name of the third generation of Ganjiro. In 1994, he was recognized as the significant incorporeal cultural heritage (living treasure) and was selected as the member of Japan Art Academy. In 2003,Culture Merit. In 2005, he inherited the stage name of Tojuro Sakata 4.
